Melting Pot…

For Melbournians looking for a new Friday Night activity which is cheap and entertaining,  take a trip to Vibe on Smith (Smith street, Fitzroy). I firstly discovered this little gem when I was kindly invited by a friend and musician (Kayha), last month. I was really impressed by the concept of the “Melting Pot” they run weekly. Basically, the venue attracts melbourne’s upcoming musical artists every Friday night from 7pm to 11pm. And when I said cheap, I mean it.. entry is only $5!  The variety of hosted talent successfully melds into a musical tasting plate with a little bit of something for everyone. (think Musical Tapas!)

Each show is divided into 2 sessions (20 minutes interval), featuring a total of 6 artists, or sometimes more, depending on the act. Musical genre varies, but usually follows an acoustic pop/blues feel. I like to call it “ lounge room” music. Stuff you can kick back and relax to with a couple of beers and friends.

In each jam session, you’ll experience three artists/acts who gather in the centre of the band room located upstairs. They’re huddled around a small table, usually cluttered with equipment and refershments, adding to the casual lounge feel. If it’s drinks you’re looking for and something to munch on,  the bar at the back of the room offers cheap beer (5 Seeds, $6). And if your stomach is rumbling, I encourage you to smash the decent pizzas and wedges which are also very modest in price.

So, on Friday nights, why not indulge in some local music on a comfy couch, consume beer and break your week’s diet to your heart’s extent?   The atmosphere itself is certainly a great attraction, enjoyed by people of all ages, including children (well-behaved ones, might I add. Noise is to be avoided as the feel is intimate). If you’re catching the later session, you can conveniently grab dinner downstairs in the restaurant area which offers a broader menu than the bandroom (Try the Prawn Skewers and Calamari Tapas. Just don’t eat the Prawn’s tail -that’s advice from Kahya)

Performances take place in rounds and musicians are mostly acoustic solo artists, although on some occassions, duos have performed. If you’re a regular you’ll get to know artists which re-appear every few weeks, and often they’ll provide mailing lists and merch that you can easily pick up. Musicians include the lovely Kahya (keys + vocal) , Daniel Champagne (guitar + vocal ), Ryan Murphy (guitar + vocal) Megan Kent and more…

Melting Pot also takes place in different locations around Melbourne. Visit the MySpace site for info on upcoming artists.: http://www.myspace.com/meltingpotonline

Change your Friday nights and  support live music in Melbourne!

Back from the dead.

Yep, back from the dead. I am convinced no one reads this so I’ll go on to say whatever the fuck I want.

Yes blog, a lot has changed since my last post a few years ago. I actually possess something we call direction as I’m studying at University. (Oooooh I hear you say). Direction, when referring to life, is really an abstract term in my eyes, just like the number zero, It tells us what’s not there; something intangibly conceptual in its own existence, or non existance, used by the masses as a definition for the belief a university degree equates to direction. (Sometimes I hope the masses are right).

Mummy and Daddy don’t set you up with ideals for the string of relationship breakdowns, promotions/demotions, marital affairs, miscarriages, early deaths of friends, car breakdowns, house fires..I’m not sure where that’s going but my point of venting lies in the concept of ideals. They’re just ideas, not commandments.

I think I prefer being destination-less. But I will walk when the green man tells me to.

On lighter topics, I’ll allocate space to my most recent possession addition: The iPhone.

There’s millions of reviews, photos, apps and info on the web because let’s face it…everyone has one or wants one!

Even the “homeless” people on the corner have one.

I’ll tell you the truth though. These apps are the ones you want-

(Corruption time, Don’t go thinking my corruptive streak has changed in the past 4 years.)

TonePad Pro- Design your own ringtones! Or fiddle around with a whole myriad of tones for fun. My phone rang today and it didn’t annoy me one bit! Say Goodbye to the Marimbas and Old Phone bells and welcome the sound of fairies (that’s what they sound like to me) into your bank of ringtones. No clipping or file converting required. I’ve been emailing them to myself from my phone, importing them into iTunes and then downloading back on to my phone. (It’s a bit of a process, but it’s painless and totally worth it. I suppose one improvement could be to have them automatically appear in the phone’s ringtone list once you’ve saved it but anyhoo!)

Hipstamatic- Changeable camera lens. Color/Contrast/Flash options. Great for anyone, not only camera whores.

Record Makers RM- Cute illustrations divided into three panels. Remember those children’s books which had pages split in 3? Mine had a divided Teddy bear so you could change his hat, clothes and shoes. This game is a little like that.  There are illustrations you can flip through and match up in 3 sections. There’s no objection really, otherwise to provide cute amusement.   http://app.recordmakers.com/

TypeDrawing- Create your own graphics out of streams of words. The choice of background color could be better but it’s fun nonetheless.

DoodleJump- Control a little character by moving your whole device. This little man has to jump up a whole series of platforms. If he falls off, he dies!

Scramble- For all those word game nerds like me, you’ll find scramble is a challenge more so than other games like twisty text. Which brings me on to my next favorite: Twisty Text. If you like easy games, this is one of them. It’s basically a glorified version of word jumble games. Find as many words out of a combination of letters which makes up the big word/words.

Labyrinth 3D- Move a metal ball through a wooden maze and be careful to avoid the holes in the board. Level up to challenge yourself. Complete with sound effects!

More to come later! (Probably)

Hope you’ve enjoyed hearing from me.

(If you’re listening that is)

Nothing of importance (that’s what a blog is for, right?)

I’m actually a blog virgin so here goes…

Exams are almost over, YAY! I only have the french one left. And if you know me well, you should know I don’t stress about french. D’accord!

I’ve been feeling pretty confident. I’m not sure, is that a good thing or a bad thing? Maybe I fucked up my exams real bad, and I just dont know it!  Good news is, once that stuff  is all over I AM FREE.. No more high school, blazer wearing catholic school girls whining about the size of their breasts and failed hair dye experience. And I’ve got some interviews for Uni lined up which is making me really excited, yay yay!

Whilst I should be studying, I’ve been playing poker online with Erusaito. I never really knew how to play poker… it’s pretty addictive.  Actually, im waiting for someone to come online so I can have a game lol.

Here’s an interesting fact about poker… *loads wikipedia search: poker…ah crap…* okay! Poker seems pretty boring on paper.. or in the world of the internets. After a few (more like 20) rounds of poker with Erusaito I think it’s fair to say we’re both pretty good…or pretty bad. If you’re new to poker I’d recommend playing the MSN version because it’s really easy, but it’s different to the real game..It’s the seven stud poker version online.. Msn realises they’ve made us all stupid so their games are really easy. They have a sample of winning hands in the instructions and the objection and strategies are explained well.

Anyways, that’s my contribution to “Pure corruption”. I’m supposed to write things to make u wanna play poker. Quite frankly, I don’t care if u start playing poker or not.

Well, I must be off. I need to shower. Happy I’ve posted now Erusaito? :)

Corruption starts here

First post to “Pure Corruption”! I honestly don’t have any idea what to write here, but yea. Crap will do.

Backgammon Board

Deek introduced me to Backgammon last night. Yeap! The supposedly classic board game. I just learnt how to play it last night …on MSN. Lol. God bless the MSN world. I don’t think I could survive without my MSN buddies. Gotta love them for sure. Anyway, it took me around an hour til I could get what my aim was. TO GET TO THE HOME BASE! Hahaha. Itw as clearly stated at the start of the game, but meh, screw that, we played anyway.

I must say the saying “Ignorance is Bliss” fits really well with last night’s game. We just went around the board not knowing what to do, and ended up kicking each other’s checkers to the middle board (which apparently only exists in MSN Backgammon, I think). I finally got what was going on, when Deek started winning with 50 pips left while I had 221 pips. LAUGH ALL YOU WANT! I wasn’t really into it, until I knew what to do, which was at the end of the game when Deek finally won the game. But since it’s an MSN game, and they have different aims to win the game, we had to play once more to determine who’s the final winner. The winner needs to get 3 points to actually win the game. I suck at explaining, so I won’t bother. Hopefully Deek will post another entry regarding the game. If not, then that’s just too bad. You have to try and play the game yourself! :P

It’s my first try in corrupting your mind. Play Backgammon!
