For Melbournians looking for a new Friday Night activity which is cheap and entertaining, take a trip to Vibe on Smith (Smith street, Fitzroy). I firstly discovered this little gem when I was kindly invited by a friend and musician (Kayha), last month. I was really impressed by the concept of the “Melting Pot” they run weekly. Basically, the venue attracts melbourne’s upcoming musical artists every Friday night from 7pm to 11pm. And when I said cheap, I mean it.. entry is only $5! The variety of hosted talent successfully melds into a musical tasting plate with a little bit of something for everyone. (think Musical Tapas!)
Each show is divided into 2 sessions (20 minutes interval), featuring a total of 6 artists, or sometimes more, depending on the act. Musical genre varies, but usually follows an acoustic pop/blues feel. I like to call it “ lounge room” music. Stuff you can kick back and relax to with a couple of beers and friends.
In each jam session, you’ll experience three artists/acts who gather in the centre of the band room located upstairs. They’re huddled around a small table, usually cluttered with equipment and refershments, adding to the casual lounge feel. If it’s drinks you’re looking for and something to munch on, the bar at the back of the room offers cheap beer (5 Seeds, $6). And if your stomach is rumbling, I encourage you to smash the decent pizzas and wedges which are also very modest in price.
So, on Friday nights, why not indulge in some local music on a comfy couch, consume beer and break your week’s diet to your heart’s extent? The atmosphere itself is certainly a great attraction, enjoyed by people of all ages, including children (well-behaved ones, might I add. Noise is to be avoided as the feel is intimate). If you’re catching the later session, you can conveniently grab dinner downstairs in the restaurant area which offers a broader menu than the bandroom (Try the Prawn Skewers and Calamari Tapas. Just don’t eat the Prawn’s tail -that’s advice from Kahya)
Performances take place in rounds and musicians are mostly acoustic solo artists, although on some occassions, duos have performed. If you’re a regular you’ll get to know artists which re-appear every few weeks, and often they’ll provide mailing lists and merch that you can easily pick up. Musicians include the lovely Kahya (keys + vocal) , Daniel Champagne (guitar + vocal ), Ryan Murphy (guitar + vocal) Megan Kent and more…
